Chicory Late Season

Chicory varieties for the late season

The chicory varieties for use in the late season are shown below. These varieties need the longest growth period, preferably 160-170 days, and the chicory roots in the field are generally lifted at the end of the growing season. Chicory roots from these varieties are suitable for extremely long storage and, depending on the variety and the root properties, usually need at least four to six months cold storage to produce high-quality chicory heads.

Chicory Topmodel

The chicory witloof variety Topmodel (OK-2009) clearly stood out in all internal tests. Topmodel is a chicory hybrid for the late segment. Stephane Hoquet is especially proud of this discovery. Stephane: “This variety is unique because of its remarkable shelf life, great flavour and short pith”. And we can indeed confirm this from all the tests that we carried out in recent years.

Excellent flavour

Topmodel is a little shorter and more bulbous than Vintor. The very thick leaf and the high weight density are particularly striking features. The flavour is mild, almost sweet. Chicory witloof Topmodel also does well during the root cultivation stage, because of its strong and healthy foliage, which remains vigorous until late in the autumn and which seems to have good tolerance to a number of fungal diseases. The optimum forcing period begins after a minimum of 3 months of cold storage and continues until the end of the season (or longer).

Root content

It is important to obtain a root that has sufficient content and a sufficiently large diameter. To achieve this you need up to 170 days of growth or more. So it should be sown not too late in order to achieve these 170 days of growth towards the end of the growing season.
