Chicory Late Season

Chicory varieties for the late season

The chicory varieties for use in the late season are shown below. These varieties need the longest growth period, preferably 160-170 days, and the chicory roots in the field are generally lifted at the end of the growing season. Chicory roots from these varieties are suitable for extremely long storage and, depending on the variety and the root properties, usually need at least four to six months cold storage to produce high-quality chicory heads.

Chicory Sweet Lady

Chicory witloof Sweet Lady is a little bit shorter than Vintor. The heads of Sweet Lady have beautifully tapering foliage with long, continuous outer leaves and substantially shorter pith than chicory witloof Vintor. Another excellent advantage offered by Sweet Lady is its high degree of uniformity. (click on the pictures to enlarge).

Sweet Lady slightly shorter than Vintor

The heads of Sweet Lady are slightly shorter than Vintor and this variety has proven to be extremely reliable during the forcing period because it is highly manageable. Sweet Lady prefers somewhat higher forcing temperatures, so less cooling capacity is required in the forcing rooms during the summer. Compared with Vintor, Sweet Lady can be forced slightly earlier and its CMS characteristic makes it even more uniform. Sweet Lady is highly reliable for forcing until almost the end of the season.

Root content

It is important to obtain a root that has sufficient content and a sufficiently large diameter. To achieve this you need up to 170 days of growth or more. So it should be sown not too late in order to achieve these170 days of growth towards the end of the growing season.
