Chicory varieties for the mid season
The chicory varieties for use in the mid-season are shown below. These varieties need a growth period of 150-160 days. Wait for favourable sowing conditions for these varieties and ensure they have enough days to grow. Depending on the root properties, these chicory witloof roots can be used for forcing after six to eight weeks in cold storage and can then be forced for approx 4 months depending to the variety, maturity and quality of the root and the storage conditions of the roots. As these varieties have had more days to mature as well as a longer storage period, they can generally be forced at lower forcing temperatures (16-18 °C).
Red Chicory Festive
Festive is a red chicory hybrid that is grown in season after Ceralie. Festive can be grown after the roots have matured sufficiently in a cold storage facility. Depending on the maturity of the root, this variety develops a beautiful red color. The heads of Festive are slightly slimmer than those of Ceralie and have attractive red leaf edges. It is important to keep the temperature in the growing rooms somewhat lower than with white chicory witloof varieties during the same period.
Beautiful color is obtained from mid-season
Festive is sown with fewer seeds per hectare than our chicory witloof varieties and prefers to mature gradually in the field. The recommended harvest period is from November 1st (in the Northern Hemisphere), depending on the diameter and number of growing days. Festive can be forced after sufficient pre-cooling of the roots (>6 weeks).
