Chicory Late Season

Chicory varieties for the late season

The chicory varieties for use in the late season are shown below. These varieties need the longest growth period, preferably 160-170 days, and the chicory roots in the field are generally lifted at the end of the growing season. Chicory roots from these varieties are suitable for extremely long storage and, depending on the variety and the root properties, usually need at least four to six months cold storage to produce high-quality chicory heads.

Chicory Podium

Chicory witloof Podium is a CMS hybrid of the Topmodel type. Typical Topmodel characteristics are therefore apparent in the Podium, a bulbous chicory with a high specific weight and substantially shorter pith than other varieties for the same forcing period (comparable with Topmodel). Another excellent advantage offered by Podium is its high degree of uniformity and good root yield. In the field, the Podium is highly tolerant against various fungal conditions (click on the pictures to enlarge).

Podium slightly earlier than Topmodel

Podium is slightly earlier than Topmodel and has proven to be extremely reliable during the forcing period because it is highly manageable. Podium prefers somewhat higher forcing temperatures, so less cooling capacity is required in the forcing rooms during the summer. Compared with  chicory witloof Topmodel, Podium can be forced slightly earlier and its CMS characteristic makes it even more uniform. Podium is highly reliable for forcing until the end of the season.

Root content

It is important to obtain a root that has sufficient content and a sufficiently large diameter. To achieve this you need up to 170 days of growth or more. So it should be sown not too late in order to achieve these170 days of growth towards the end of the growing season
