Early forcing results

The majority of chicory forcers have already switched over to early forcing a few weeks ago. In general the roots are healthy and the incidence level of disease is quite low. The forcing period is indicating a good chicory harvest (click on the photos for an impression of Atlas and Désir in November 2009). The shelf life offers almost no problems.

Good root ripeness

From the beginning we have seen sufficient ripeness in the roots, which in general have enjoyed a good growth season. As a result of the high figures for dry matter, certain lots have a bit more difficulty getting started and need a higher forcing temperature in order to establish and maintain growth. Several root lots show mediocre root crowns. Often this is the result of difficulties in trimming caused by overhanging foliage.

Use of calcium chloride

Root lots with relatively high figures for dry matter and relatively bare tips are very vulnerable to dehydration. Make sure that there is sufficient hydration in chilled storage. Immersing the roots in calcium chloride is a very effective method of keeping the crop vital. See also Use of calcium chloride.

Force ripe crops on a flatter schedule

With riper crops, switch to a flatter temperature schedule temporarily. The Hoquet varieties are heat-loving. A somewhat higher final temperature results in smoother heads which are closed more tightly. See also the general forcing advice from November-December.
